Its second engine swap brought its external appearance mostly in line with the standard Crossley to GM rebuilds, but there were some key spotting differences that keen-eyed enthusiasts could enjoy. The most obvious was the plating of one of the bodyside ‘portholes’ on one side, but more subtle was the lower position of the multiple working socket on the cab fronts and the reversed upper vacuum pipe stowing position. 234 only achieved a six-year working life with CIÉ and was stored in September 1985. Like 227s elsewhere in this run, it was acquired by Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) in 1986 who renumbered in 109, the last of the six members of the MV or 104 Class fleet. The expected freight work for which these were purchased sadly never materialised and this example did not work after August 1987. It was eventually cut up at Belfast York Road in March 1993.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0019/3957/0801/files/2026.10.13AccurascaleC201Class234CIESupertrain_ex-Maybach_347d462e-4751-40b5-98bf-2e80c44c3e4a.jpg?v=1792567608
